How the Shopify calculation works

Seller revenue = product price + buyer-paid shipping. Net profit = revenue − payment fee − third-party fee − product cost − shipping cost − ad spend − allocated monthly cost − other costs.

With ad spend

$50 revenue − $15 product − $5 shipping − $1.75 card fee (Basic 2.9% + $0.30) − $12 ad spend = $16.25 profit (32.5%). Break-even ROAS is 1.77x.

Without ad spend

With organic or direct sales ($0 ad spend), net profit rises to $28.25 (56.5% contribution margin).

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Shopify fees, payment gateways, and advertising profitability.

How do I calculate break-even ROAS on Shopify?

Break-even ROAS is calculated by dividing your total selling price by your pre-ad contribution margin: Break-Even ROAS = Selling Price ÷ (Selling Price − Product Cost − Shipping − Payment Gateway Fees). If a product sells for $50 and your net margin before advertising is $25, your break-even ROAS is $50 ÷ $25 = 2.0x.

What is the difference between Break-Even ROAS and Target ROAS?

Break-Even ROAS is the minimum advertising efficiency required so your net profit is exactly $0.00. Target ROAS builds in your business's desired profit margin above break-even. If your break-even ROAS is 2.0x, your required target ROAS will depend on your target margin and fixed business overhead.

What are official Shopify US payment processing fees in 2026?

Official 2026 Shopify Payments rates for US domestic credit cards are: Basic plan at 2.9% + $0.30, standard Shopify plan at 2.7% + $0.30, Advanced plan at 2.5% + $0.30, and Shopify Plus starting at 2.15% + $0.30 per transaction.

Does Shopify charge extra transaction fees if I use PayPal or third-party gateways?

Yes. If you choose not to use Shopify Payments and instead process orders through an external gateway (like PayPal, Stripe, or Authorize.net), Shopify assesses an additional transaction fee: 2.0% on Basic, 1.0% on Shopify, 0.6% on Advanced, and 0.2% on Plus.

How does order volume affect my ideal Shopify subscription tier?

As monthly gross sales volume scales beyond roughly $30,000 to $40,000 per month, upgrading from Basic to the standard Shopify plan or Advanced plan saves more money in reduced credit card transaction percentages (0.2% to 0.4% savings) than the higher monthly subscription cost.
